What is FUTURE FEST?

We are living in a future imagined by previous generations.

Who are the people dreaming up what comes next?

We believe the time has come to bring together the thinkers, the planners, and the dreamers to showcase ideas about where we are headed as a society and as a species. FUTURE FEST is the Space Beach Foundation’s first foray into the cultural conversation to spark public discussion and cross-pollination between art, science, philosophy, and policy.

We are bringing together great minds from the worlds of art, science, technology and the academy. How do they, and we, imagine the future of work, of medicine, of technological innovation and integration? We want to hear about the work being done in outer space, both the astronomical exploration and the burgeoning space economy. We want to learn about quantum computing and how that could change information processing, storage and breakthrough. We want to hear from artists, filmmakers, musicians, and writers who are feeling out radical new ways of being in the world.

The intersection of science fiction and scientific and technological innovation is a fluid and dynamic convergence. Whether we are unpacking the ideas of pioneers in speculative fiction like Jules Verne, Ursula K. LeGuin, Robert Heinlein or Octavia Butler or investigating the radical new technologies being developed and put into the world, we want to stimulate the imagination and curiosity of the public at large.

We also want to make a concerted effort to imagine an optimistic future. Part of the project of FUTURE FEST is to collectively envision futures that include a thriving humanity, breakthroughs that help, systems that support. Dystopian fantasy has become a reflex that reinforces negative outlooks and possible outcomes. With a clear eye on the world as it is, we believe that if we dream together about a positive future, we have more potential to realize one.

Our vision is to grow FUTURE FEST into a landmark festival that celebrates visionary ideas. Southern California is situated at the American frontier and has always been a home for experimentation, innovation, and frontier philosophies. We are planning arts and film showcases, educational talks, technological exhibitions, and state-of-the-art integrations of art and science. Let’s push for an optimistic, human-centered future where great minds collaborate on dreaming big.

Please join us this February as we host a pop-up version of FUTURE FEST in Long Beach, California. We are hosting a physical gallery space at 240 Pine Ave. in the downtown district where you can see these ideas germinating. We’d also love to hear from you. What ideas, trends, industries or visionary artists would you like us to bring to the table?

Want to get involved?

We’re building the clubhouse, but you’re the ones who will make it a community. We want the weird ideas, the big dreams, and the local talent that makes Long Beach what it is. Whether you’re an artist, a scientist, or a neighbor who wants to help us decorate the block—we want to hear from you.

Use the form below to drop us a line. Artist proposals, volunteer hands, and "Space Parade" ideas are all officially encouraged.
